I sat in worship, wearing my black tie with hearts all over it because it was Valentine’s Day, with the church my Honey and I joined the Sunday before. It was the first Sunday in Lent and the Lectionary passage was Luke 4:1-11 about the temptation of Christ.
Rather than a sermon about God’s love and St. Valentine and the hearts on my tie, the minister talked about the Devil.
That’s right, the Devil.
Honey and I joined a church where the minister preaches about the Devil on Valentine’s Day.
“They haven’t taken up the offering so maybe I can just slip out unnoticed,” I thought.
Honey slid closer and put her arm around me.
I was there for the duration.
It was my first time hearing a sermon about Satan on St. Valentine’s Day. Since I had to be there, I listened more closely…
…and I heard the minister say, “The Devil first attacks your mind because all behavior starts as a thought in your mind.”
Guilty as charged.
How many times as a speaker and coach have I talked about the Perceive core practice of the Faith Positive lifestyle and how if you want to increase your faith with greater joy at work so you love God and others more, you focus on the positive God is doing at work and filter out the negative?
“Your Faith Positive lifestyle starts and stops in your mind,” I say all the time.
And I wanted to leave because I was unaccustomed to sermons about the Devil on Valentine’s Day. I wanted to stop my Faith Positive lifestyle that Sunday because of a devilish attack on my mind.
I just love it when the Holy Spirit executes an end-around your flank and gooses you right where you work, don’t you?
The Divine sense of humor laughs out loud and pulls a “Gotcha!”
I was headed for the exit because something unfamiliar was happening.
God had a better idea.
Our church typically observes Holy Communion once a month, on the first Sunday. And yet during this Lenten season, we have the option of taking it every Sunday.
“Honey can go by herself if she wants to take it,” I thought. “I don’t need it.”
And yet, when she took my hand and squeezed it, and I looked in her loving eyes, and she said, “You want to?,” I heard the Spirit speaking and said, “Sure.”
As I returned to my pew, peace filled my spirit, joined with The Spirit.
Yes, even on the Valentine’s Day Sunday the minister preached about the Devil.
