mistakeUsing a dull ax requires great strength, so sharpen the blade. That’s the value of wisdom, it helps you succeed. (Ecclesiastes 10:10, NLT)

Ever said out loud, “I wish I knew then what I know now”?

It’s what you don’t know and don’t know you don’t know that keeps you from succeeding.

So how do you know what you don’t know?

Here are 3 Ways to Grow Wiser at Work:

Make Mistakes

Is your personal workstyle to always get it right the first time?

If it is, odds are you’re still doing what you were doing the same way you were doing it five years ago. Only now, your work is less relevant, perhaps facing elimination from automation.

Wisdom blooms best in the fertile soil of mistakes. History is replete with stories of innovators like Thomas Edison persevering through more failed attempts than successful ones until they eliminate all other possibilities save the one that works best.

As a Christian business person, you do believe in grace, right? An amazing grace that covers all your sins?

The Faith Positive workstyle focuses you on believing God’s Positive Spirit (GPS) is at work in your work, providing the necessary grace for you to make mistakes and find your path to success.

Sharpen your ax blade. Make mistakes. Grow wiser.

Make New Mistakes

“Dr. Joey,” you say, “I know Jesus has enough grace to cover my mistakes. It’s my boss I’m worried about!”

I understand. Been there, done that with folks who are so paralyzed by the fear of failing—“We ain’t never done it that way before”—that even if “the old way” no longer succeeds, they choose the familiar miserable over the unfamiliar “new” every time.

This attitude is why you exert every effort to make new mistakes. Mistakes aren’t fatal, despite what your boss might think. Remember Peter and his denying Christ three times before sunrise? And how The Rock was who Jesus built the church on?

Jesus said to the naked, adulterous woman after all the elders’ dropped their stones, “Go and sin no more.” Sure, she would sin some more, and yet they would be new sins.

Go to work expecting your results to vary. Ascertain what works best. Invite the Holy Spirit to work deeply and gently within you (Ephesians 3:20, MSG) to gift you with the mind of Christ.

Receive a spiritual discernment that exceeds your normal capacities, seeing what works best, what doesn’t, and how you can apply learned lessons. Your Faith Positive workstyle helps you believe there’s always a next time.

Your ax blade gets even sharper as you make new mistakes. Grow even wiser.

Make New Mistakes Faster

In this overwhelming, fast-paced, negative world, speed matters.

You have no time for pity parties.

If wisdom grows best in mistake-fertilized soil, and your success curve improves with new sources of mistake-fertilizer, then to be successful at work, you make new mistakes faster.

Read back over Jesus’ parables and the follow-up conversations with his disciples. Their reactions much of the time were, “What?”

Jesus immediately followed up. Retold or explained the parable in a new way and quickly. This immediate feedback facilitates faster speed of learning from new mistakes.

The amazing faith-reality is that the Holy Spirit guides us from mistake to mistake to success at the speed of prayer. Asking for help is immediately met with answers as you’re ready to hear them.

That’s why pity parties are counter-productive to your Faith Positive workstyle. They prevent you from hearing what’s next and acting decisively.

Your ax blade gets even sharper as you make new mistakes faster. You grow wiser and succeed more. Your faith increases with greater joy at work as you love God and others more. You work Faith Positive!
